When I first asked Xavier if he could play a few songs at an engagement party, I said it would only be for an hour. But it’s been over two hours now, and Xavier is still going strong, keeping the party happy and pumping as he plays hit after hit. Every thirty minutes, he stops for a break, mingling with the guests and having a drink. Hannah frequently comes up to me and Avery, informing us it’s the best night of her life. And although she’s getting drunker by the hour, I’m inclined to believe her. I’ve never seen anyone buzzing as much as she is.

But what really makes it all worth it is the look on Avery’s face. We’ve both been so stressed out trying to get this script rolling, it’s nice to just kick back and have some fun. And I’m glad to see her smiling.

“You must have famous people playing at the parties you go to all the time,” Avery says as we both swipe a pig in a blanket from a passing tray.

“The parties I go to are never this fun,” I say. “And the snacks aren’t nearly as worthy. I’m not sure who decided caviar tastes good, but they should be locked up.”

I tell her about my most memorable parties, including the time I walked in on a very famous, very drunk A-lister, wiping his ass, because he didn’t lock the bathroom door. She shoots wine from her nose, clamping her palm over her face and laughing.

“Oh my God, that’s so gross.”

“The worst part was, he didn’t do a very good job. We could smell ass while he circulated the room for the rest of the night.”

“You’re going to make me throw up my pig in a blanket,” she laughs, scrunching her face.

We do the rounds several times, talking to old friends of Hannah’s, many of whom remember Avery as a kid from when they lived in Las Vegas. I bet Avery would’ve been a cute little kid, with big rosy cheeks and enormous glasses. She’s ditched the glasses tonight. It’s nice to see her deep brown eyes properly.

While I’m entertaining her with stories of past parties, I leave out the part where I’m having a much better time here, at this backyard engagement party, with her. Being here with Avery couldn’t be more different to circulating events with my usual dates. She doesn’t ask for any introductions, or leave me to go flirt with the other, more famous guy in the corner. Not that I would care if she did—it’s not like we’re actually on a date. But it’s nice, hanging out with her. Easy.

Before I know it, it’s midnight. Xavier has finished singing, his last song a duet with a very tipsy Hannah. Avery recorded it in case Hannah forgets about it in the morning. Now he’s mingling with the crowd, doing shots with Hugh and catching up with Grant.

“I’m not sure when our circle opened up to so many famous people, but I’m here for it,” Peyton says, joining me and Avery.
